School Leadership

Program

A good leader is a combination of many things. They are usually the people who:

  • Are liked and respected by most of their peers
  • Influence others to work toward goals
  • Take charge of the group
  • Judge the abilities of other children and finds places for them in the group activities
  • Figure out what is wrong with an activity and shows others how to do it better
  • Are often asked for ideas and suggestions
  • Are looked to by others when something must be decided
  • Sense what others want and help them to accomplish it
  • Enter into activities with contagious enthusiasm
  • Are chosen by peers when given a chance

At Proserpine State School, we value the importance of leadership. We have a proactive leadership program which begins informally in the lower grades, leading towards the more formal approach in Years 6 and 7.

As Year 7 children are the leaders of the school, at Proserpine State School the children in Year 6 are encouraged to begin working towards their future goals of leadership positions for the following year. These positions include:

  • School Captain/Vice Captain
  • Sporting Captains/Vice Captains
  • School Councillors
  • Year 7 Leaders

The Year 6 children take part in leadership units of work as well as attending a school camp with Leadership as the theme.

For a Year 6 child to be considered a school leader they need to prove their abilities. This is done through a Leadership Log which the children should complete over the year. This is not a compulsory task, as not all children aim for leadership positions. In the Leadership Log the children are expected to show their involvement in a mix of the following 4 categories, as well as being a Star Student for the duration of the Year.

  • Cultural Activites - School Musical, School Choirs, Band Memebers etc.
  • Community Activities - Anzac Marches, Fete Assistance etc.
  • Sporting Activities - Representative Teams etc.
  • Academic Activities - Academic Competitions etc.

The Leadership Logs are then submitted for perusal by teachers and Administration staff and future candidates are chosen if their Logs are substantive enough.
