Intrumental Music

Program

The purpose of the instrumental music program is to motivate and inspire students to be life-long, independent learners who seek musical knowledge and skills for the enrichment of themselves and the world around them.  It is the responsibility of educators to create a positive motivation for learning, performing, and appreciating music in every student.

Music addresses the human need for aesthetics, how music affects the mind, the historical and cultural aspects of music, and the extra-musical associations that tie music with every other content area.  These categories are essential for every child to receive a well rounded education.

Proserpine State School offers this wonderful program to children from Year 5 - Year 7. The program focuses on the woodwind, brass and percussion instruments, with others being added in the continuing High School program.

Once the children become proficient in their instrument, they are then invited to join the Little Kids Big Band, which is made up of children from the neighbouring schools as well as Proserpine State School. This gives them the opportunity to meet and respond to new children. Workshops are usually held at least once a term for the chance to practise as a complete band.

The band plays at numerous functions around the district including, Proserpine State School Fete, Cannonvale State School Fete, St. Catherine's Fete, Uniting Church Flower Show and other events that may arise.

Objectives of the Band Program

1.  Develop a thorough understanding of the basic skills needed to perform music: tone production, technical development, rhythm, posture, breath support, embouchure, fingerings, intonation, and articulation.
2.  Expose students to different types and styles of music.
3.  Expose students to the basic ideas of music theory, improvisation, and music history as well as the components of music.
4.  Provide an opportunity for performance as a soloist and as a member of an ensemble.
5.  Teach the vocabulary and notation of music.
6.  Develop the ability to make aesthetic responses to music.
7.  Develop a commitment to music.
8.  Develop the ability to critically listen to music.
9.  Develop the ability to learn musical concepts independently.

Proserpine State School works in conjunction with Proserpine State High School in the Instrumental Music Program, with the teacher being based at the high school. This makes the transition to the High School Band much easier.

For more information on the Instrumental Music Program at both schools visit the High School Instrumental Music Webpage. This page has up to date details on what is going on, as well as useful dates and links.

As the children go to lessons during school time, they need to be aware of their current timetable and keep it somewhere safe where they can access it each week.
