Middle Phase Projects

Students in the Middle Phase of Learning have distinctive and diverse needs. These include intellectual, social, physical, emotional and psychological needs associated with adolescence, as well as needs that arise from different life circumstances, interests, skills and talents.

Proserpine State School has a commitment to focus on the Middle Phase of Learning to ensure that every student in Years 4 - 7:

  • engages in purposeful, intellectually challenging learning
  • is provided with opportunities to achieve success
  • is supported in their transition from year to year and from primary to secondary education
  • interacts with teachers who are prepared to meet the distinctive and diverse needs of students during early adolescence.

The EQ Middle Phase of Learning Action Plan clarifies expectations for excellence and improvement in the Middle Phase of Learning in every Queensland state school.

Tips for parents and students

In Years 4 to 9 students are going through an unmatched period of cognitive, physical, social and emotional change and growth. They begin to think more broadly about issues beyond the home and family, and they want to engage in authentic, meaningful learning.

Studies have shown that this is a time when many students lose their enthusiasm for learning, disengage from classroom activities and make the least progress in learning. While some students surge forward, others find the challenges too daunting, their interest falls, their progress slows and they are more likely to leave school early.

There is clear evidence that students who are engaged and achieving in their learning during the middle phase and who are supported as they move to the senior phase are more likely to keep succeeding and stay engaged in learning and further education or training.

For these reasons, continuing to improve the Middle Phase of Learning is a priority in Proserpine State School.

All young people need support and encouragement as they move from primary school to secondary school. You can help make that next step in the learning journey a positive experience by accessing the following documents:
